III. Geopolitics

What about geopolitics ?

My four-month exchange in Prague opened my eyes to the history and politics of this Central European nation whose capital city is Prague; its rich geopolitical landscape should be explored further to better comprehend its current dynamics.

In this section, we explore a country's geopolitical situation, its place on the international scene, as well as any external or internal conflicts it is facing.

History and geopolitical positioning :

The Czech Republic emerged through the peaceful dissolution of Czechoslovakia in 1993 and joined the European Union in 2004, strengthening ties to Western Europe while still keeping an interest in Eastern Europe due to historical and cultural ties shared between both regions.

Internal situation

Domestically, the Czech Republic has managed to maintain a certain degree of stability while being affected by political tensions due to issues like corruption, socio-economic inequality and anti-European sentiment - often manifested through elections when populist rhetoric may gain ground. While generally homogenous, it still experiences ethnic tensions particularly regarding Roma communities which often feel marginalized.

Outside the country

Externally, the Czech Republic's location in Central Europe has placed it at the epicenter of wider geopolitical tensions. This can sometimes be seen in its relations with Russia where legacy of communism continues to provoke heated discussions and disputes.

The Czech Republic's membership of NATO and the EU, while bolstering security and economy, has presented it with unique challenges when it comes to its sovereignty, non-EU relations and maintaining its unique path. Western influences must coexist alongside Eastern influences without diluting or diminishing any essential characteristics that define its identity as a country.

In summary

Understanding this context is central to comprehending Czech society today. The political and social landscape is comprised of threads from history, culture and geopolitics woven intricately together.

My visit to Prague allowed me to uncover not only its natural and cultural treasures, but also its dynamic geopolitical environment. Understanding its dynamics is crucial in comprehending its development as one of Europe's premier countries.
